October 31 Final pushWell, it's been a really hectic two weeks! Three days this week working with the kids on the No on 8 campaign; taking Monster to the vet on Monday for another test, since the last test was inconclusive; writing, giving and grading the second mid-terms in all my classes; finally getting used to taking on the additional class to cover for a friend who can no longer teach it. I was so happy yesterday when I had 1 hour free for lunch! Haven't had a break all week.
I'll be happy when the election is over. I'm like a CNN junky, hanging on every word, hashing and rehashing the polls and pundit's words, hoping that Obama will win this election. Our country desparately needs the hope and a Democrat in the Whitehouse. Our economy can't afford four more years of Republican laissez-faire economics. And, as Obama said in a rally the other night, when did caring about your neighbor become socialism? The Republicans have been redistributing wealth upwards for 8 years. It's time to say, "Enough is enough!"
The Catholic Church and the Mormons continue to sink huge sums of money into the California Proposition 8 campaign, just as they did in Hawai'i. They want to write their religious beliefs into our California constitution. I want to say to every heterosexual couple I know, "When do I get to vote on your marriage?" and "Whose rights are you planning to take away next?" Folks don't realize that it's a slippery slope to write discrimination into the constitution. Next thing we'll not let Hispanics, or Jews, or atheists or anyone we don't like get married. Last weekend, as co-clerk of my Meeting, I received a piece of mail that was really shocking. Addressed to the Pastor, it equated homosexuals with folks who practice child sacrifice. We see the race tightening because of the fear mongering and outright lies being spread by the Yes on 8 campaign. It's disheartening to see that truth of the fact that if you tell a lie often enough some folks will start believing it! That was the basis of the Nazi propaganda machine and listening to the "Yes on 8" folks is not far from hearing that next they'll want to take rights away from anyone who disagree with them. Remember that the pogram against Jews began by first taking away their rights.
So I'm really tired. However the election turns out, I'll be glad it's done so I can get some rest.
Until then, I continue to storm up the hill... October 25 Monster Enters Old Age - Cushing's DiseaseGot home from Ben and Stephanie's wedding rehersal dinner last night around midnight. I'd taken Monster out to pee when I got home from work at 4 pm and we left for the rehersal around 5:30 pm. Monster seemed fine. When we returned Monster looked happy to see us and desperate to go outside, so I took him for a walk while David got ready for bed. When I came back in with Monster, David asked if Monster had peed only a little. I said, "No, these days he seems to be peeing a whole lot", which was true, something I'd noticed in recent days. David then told me Monster had peed in our bed! This was so unlike the Monster that I became really worried, especially since he appeared to not even have noticed that he'd lost control. From the wet bedding it appeared he had not even gotten up off the bed. I was really worried about him. It was so uncharacteristic of him that I thought for sure something was wrong. David and I cleaned up the bed, changed the sheets, and went to bed very tired, but neither of us slept very well for worrying. It's a sign of how much David has grown to love both Monster and I that he seemed definitely more worried about Monster than upset about what Monster had done.
This morning I immediately called Monster's vet and we went got there about 8:30 am. After a pretty good exam it appears that Monster has Cushing's disease. Both the adrenal glands and the pituitary gland are responsible for turning cortisol on and off in the body. One turns on cortisol production and the other turns it off. Based on Monster's symptoms (loss of urinary control, excessive appetite, excessive water consumption, skin problems, etc.) it appears he might have the disease. It makes perfect sense of all the symptoms Monster has been exhibiting lately and squares with the fact that this is usually a disease of older dogs. The vet took a blood and a urine test and we'll know the results on Monday. If there appears to be excess cortisol in his blood, then we'll neeed to determine whether or not the culprit is the adrenal glands or the pituitary gland.
The best outcome is that with drugs he will get better, drugs that he'll have to be on for the rest of his life. We won't know until another series of tests which will take place the day before the elections. Suddenly the elections seem not so important. The worst outcome is the need for surgery or for him to have something besides Cushings, something more serious.
So Monster and I enter old age together...systems failing...trying to use duct tape and sealing wax to keep it all together. I'm thankful that David's in my life and cares for Monster as much as I do. I'm especially thankful for the 13 years I've had with Monster, my best buddy and true friend. Monster seems little changed, except for the recent symptoms. He's energetic, he eats, and today he played like the old puppy after I gave him a bath. I think it's time to start treasuring time with him and honoring both our diminishments! October 10 Connecticut Rules!Well, the third state to have gay marriage is now Connecticut! I think it's just a matter of time before folks realize that religious marriage and state marriage are two different kinds of contracts. One is sanctioned by the state and the other by a religion. Your religioun has no right to dictate for all religions in our country. My religion, the Religious Society of Friends, has Meeting by Meeting affirmed the right to marry within our religion. Not all Meetings, but many have now said that gay marriages can be as solid, as faithful, as important, as sacred as heterosexual marriages. My Meeting has affirmed that all marriages are sacred and therefore should legally be recognized. It might be that your religion believes differently. Great! We each can decide who to marry. But neither of us should dictate for everyone the legal aspect of marriage. Now three state supreme courts have ruled that a legal contract is not a religious contract and that legal contracts should be available to everyone. Hurrah! It's just a matter of time before each religion gets to decide who it will marry, and the rest of us can be married by the state!
Don't be forcing legal contracts to conform to your religious beliefs! It's not fair or appropriate in this country, unless some of you want to dictate that women shouldn't work, shouldn't leave the house without a vail, should be submissive to their husbands and all other kinds of draconian religious beliefs! Keep religion out of our legal system. When will the religious bigots understand that? |
